HAPPY NEW YEARS everyone!  It's 2013, and I know that it will be an epic year.  Technically 3 years into the business of illustration and graphic design, yet again 2013 will be a HUGE transition year for jayemmsee studios.

THE CONCEPT behind WORLD GO BLUE
In the beginning of 2012, it was just a thought and she mentioned "would you create my album cover?" Midway through the year, it became a reality with the Kickstarter Splash Page project and again I  was very humbled that she would ask me to be her album artist as the dream was coming to reality.  It was quite something putting our knoggin's together to create the album art for World Go Blue.

This album is truly special in a sense that the concept came from how Alfa has grown as a singer/songwriter in the last 2 years, in character, and in her integrity.  I feel like the songs represent how she has been breathing the ins and outs of life, passion, and love.  It's amazing how someone can translate the meaning of life into melodies, harmonies, and musical notes.  I've been fortunate to be part of the journey, watching, and even traveling with Alfa.  It has definitely been an adventure.

That being said, the concept of the album art: attains the sense of traveling and going places you've never seen before, yet getting familiar with the nuances of life through those very moment, capturing it into a memory.  Sometimes its not only about the happy go lucky moments, but the darker sinister moments, that create the richness and values of life.  We journey together, soar together, and enjoy together, through whatever it may be that we are tangled in.  In a sense we get wrapped up and carried away in the different moments of life, love, and struggles.  That phrase sometimes goes like this, "Oh that tangled web we weave.".

So with all those thoughts, I tried to create something that would  illustrate what Alfa was communicating and processing to me.  For many weeks I had creative block, but one day it just clicked, just as she is with her music, I took what I was good at doing: drawing, and creating with strings and things away from the computer to create a title that would stand out more than others.  Then I used the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to enhance what was already there.  Thank you Garrick Fujii for being an awesome photographer for the shoot back in August.  It made the entire project so much easier because the photos were already amazing.

Most of this album was about choice typography, layout design, color, photo, art direction, branding, and just puzzling it all together into one wallet sized package.

Roosevelt Middle School: Compton Initiative Workday

This past weekend was our last workday of the year for Compton Initiative.  We were at Roosevelt Middle School and Compton High. Thousands of volunteers came out to repaint the entire school's exterior, and a about 200 volunteers came to paint and boldly brighten up Roosevelt's campus with 3 murals.  Thanks to the entire leadership team; these days never happen without you.  Kudos for finishing the year off strong as our lieutenants and leaders.  Check out what we did on Saturday October 15, 2011.in the mural department. I personally had the privilege to re-vectorize the school pledge, and design the We Are Roosevelt Mural.  Thank you to my clean-up artists: Ruthy and Audra.!!! Pin the Wattle on the Turkey

Pin the Wattle on the Turkey Game Poster, 2' by 3', digital illustration I was asked to do poster for a game for a preschool in Cerritos, CA.back in November 2011. They wanted something that was a spin off of Pin the Tail on the Donkey.  BUT...since it was Thanksgiving they wanted a turkey.  At first we were thinking of tail feathers; it was a better concept that it was the wattle.  It is silly, and different. I chose to use modern autumn palette.  I wanted the poster to look friendly, subtle, refreshing, and clean.  I've seen several fun cartoon turkeys, but it was a bit much.  This is what I was able to come up with.  The poster is 24" by 36"  and in full color. The kids really enjoyed the game.

#4. Deep Blue

Deep Blue, 9 in. by 12 in., watercolor, 02/14/2019 I totally missed the last week of the creative challenge I set out for this year.  I thought to continue on rather than look back and dwell on the fact that I missed a week already. This week has been tough playing catch up to all the structured responsibilities that I have.  Traveling out of town two weeks in a row was really fun and awesome, but it did take quite a bit of effort and energy.  Not to include that there have been some hard conversations and quite a bit of transitions on the team that I work with at my part-time job. I needed to sit and paint to let loose and let go of all that structure.  All the tension, worries, and "suppose to" went into letting the water and colors work on my behalf. Deep blue • flood • running river • flow • calm storm • abstract • letting go • defender • love is war • oceans • move • let justice flow • mercy • grace • waves : these were all the words that came to mind.
